Amalie Marinas Talks Christmas, Beauty and The Perfect Party Outfit
Can you share a bit about who you are and what you're doing these days?
I’m a 22 year old from the lovely south coast of Norway, currently living in London where doing my MA in Public Relations, at University of the Arts London. Therefore, my life at the moment is influenced by a variety of cultural impulses - which I find truly exciting!
What does your December look like this year?
As much as I’d love December to be all about Christmas, being a student this time of year of course indicates assignment deadlines.. However, I try to bring my writing with me to café's or galleries as inspiration often comes with the change of environment. Finally, I’ll enjoy the holiday together with my family in Kristiansand.
What is your “must do” to get in the Christmas spirit?
Although I try forcing it by listening to my favourite Christmas song (listed below), the only thing that really gets me into the ‘Christmas spirit’ is when the intro of ‘Tre nøtter til Askepott’ comes on. There hasn’t been a year without! Additionally, I can’t help but falling a little bit in love with Jude Law (ref. Holiday) all over again each year..
You got 10 minutes in the bathroom before you have to run. What do you do?
Wondering why I’m already late (again), and hope that I’ll magically improve. Well, a New Years resolution right there.
What do you always bring with you in your purse?
Nuxe Baume Levres Reve de Miel - Honey Lip Balm
Can you share your favourite beauty tips?
O.P.I nail strengthener has become a favourite of mine. Put a couple layers of this underneath any nail polish, and believe me it does wonders. Also, I haven’t used mascara for years, instead, I tend to use a dark brown eyeshadow to create a blurred line along the upper lashes. It gives a more casual yet sophisticated look.
How do you style the perfect Christmas outfit?
Again, comfort is key - and I love the combination of different materials, for say wool and silk. It really makes the perfect Christmas look, in my opinion. Keep it simple, but don’t be shy when it comes to sparkling accessories
Your best Oslo tips?
Oslo has a special place in my heart, although it’s slightly small it has so much to offer, especially the advantage of nature and urbanity combined. If you haven’t yet, do yourself a favor and order ‘Koh Tao’ noodles at Tunco, and then visit the petite, but truly charming cocktail bar Merkur next door.
What are your key pieces for a great and stylish wardrobe?
Years of hunting came to an end earlier this fall, when I finally found the perfect blazer. I believe I’ve worn it almost every other day since, but it really goes with anything in my wardrobe. Other than that, I can’t do without my tiny neck scarves as well as my favourite jewellery made by my truly talented friend, Tone (@__saltstudio).
What do you prefer to eat at Christmas Eve?
Traditionally I’m used to eating ‘pinnekjøtt’, but as I rarely consume meat on a day-to-day basis, I have to say I favorise the following brunches the most.
... listen to?
My dad’s vinyls containing jazzy Christmas tunes from the 60’s up until the 90’s.
I started reading ‘A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women’ by Siri Hustvedt earlier this fall, but it was put on the shelf for the benefit of syllabus books. Thus, I hope to dive back into it over the holidays. Strongly recommended!
Can you share your New Year's resolution?
I intend to make podcasts a daily habit. Recently came across the French ‘La Poudre’, which luckily for all non-french speakers has a few english episodes as well.
Do you have any ideas for Christmas presents?
I usually collect prints/posters from galleries (student friendly prices), something that lasts forever — and comes in handy if you, like me, has to bring everything ‘home for Christmas’ by suitcase.
Bar: Himkok, Torgata botaniske, & Bortenfor.
Brand: byTiMo - as it lays closely to my heart, Luck, and Acne Archive for treasure hunting. Also, I’m looking forward to visit the newly opened ‘Rodebjer’ concept store in Prinsens gate.
Party outfit: Comfort is key — personally I prefer high waisted pants, a sharp blazer, a tiny neck scarf, boots (suitable for dancing!) and some fancy earrings. Voila!
Sunday outfit: Depends on what I’m up to. Usually, I spend my Sundays treating myself with a visit to a gallery, markets, or just strolling around. So, my loafers, jeans, turtleneck (woollen ones nowadays) and my favourite vintage Acne mens shirt always comes to a rescue. Layering & comfort is always a success!
Food: Anything plant based! Especially baked beets with fresh thyme, chèvre and walnuts on top. Excited to try the lunch at NoFo in Oslo this weekend.
Drinks: Coffe (with a dash of almond milk), and red wine.
Christmas song/s: Auld Lang Syne by The Cast. Oh, and ‘O Helga Natt’ by Nils Bech gets me every time!
